There's a critical essay on Franny by John Updike which appearred in the New York Times Review of Books upon its publication. Updike dismisses Franny as a hysterical co-ed "in trouble." His reading of the story, and this analysis posatively infuriated me. So much so that I went to see Updike at a reading in Boston for the express purpose of asking him to defend his old observations. I didn't get the chance as he didn't open the floor up to questions about old essays he had written concerning JDS. This fire still burns in my belly, and I carry a not inconsiderable amount of animosity towards old John ( I hated the damn Rabbit books.) While reading some of the old Bananfish archives, I found a passing mention to Franny and pregnancy. Can anyone give any sort of credible defense of this Franny with child idea ? I'm just curious. Of course if anyone would like to join my Updike lynch mob, they're more than welcome. I am new to this list this week and I made some rather foolish responses to some postings, I will attempt to be more discerning in the future.
