> Has anyone ever noticed Muriel's last name--Fedder--for its literal > implications? Spelled differently, it's Fetter--a noun meaning a > shackle or restraint...a verb meaning to shackle or physically restrain. Brendan: This is an intriguing idea, wordplay that I considered in the past, and that I believe merits some consideration now -- but as a NYC kid myself, I always marvelled at how many of the "better" apartment buildings (certainly in the neighborhood the Glasses [and the Salingers] lived) had air conditioners made by a company called Fedders. (No apostrophe in there, I believe.) So, whenever I saw the surname "Fedder," my connection to it was, "Ah, they must be the family that owns the A/C company." Anyhow, as Mrs. Fedder would no doubt say, "Go figure." --tim
