_JD Salinger: A Study in Short Fiction_ by John Wenke will help you get a
handle, and if that's not available, Warren French's _JD Salinger_ and
_Salinger Revisited_ can also be most useful.  As for "De-Daumier-Smith's
Blue Period," the story _for me_ is about a young man coming to some
pretty clear realizations (and a certified epiphany!) about art and women
and self that finally help him see who he really is...instead of seeking
impossible love with sister irma, he finally seeks american girls in
shorts...instead of pretending to be picasso's pal, he will find his own
painting way...I love to use this story in my creative writing classes 
because it teaches artists to find themselves and their own way
through their art-lives, will
