What Mattis is getting at is that it is generally considered not a good
thing to attach a document to something you send to a mailing list.
There are a couple of good reasons for this.

One is that lots of us don't use MS Word and might not even be able to
open the file.

Another is the MS Word files are among the fastest-growing sources of
computer virii, so many people (e.g., me!) won't open an unknown file
without first inspecting it ... which takes time ... which is scarce.

Third is that not everyone uses mailers that can accept attachments.
Mattis made a good point, which is that the best thing to do is put your
stuff up on a web page and just send us the URL, and we can go looking.

It's true, we do digress. But that's kind of partly traditional and
partly natural.

I think Mattis was being metaphorical. The usual method people use is
to join, hover a bit, check things out, and then get a sense of the
"community" before joining in. But hey, you're plenty welcome here!

I have little interest in getting involved in THIS issue, but the only
thing I'll ask is: please don't post Salinger material here. I don't
want to see this list get shut down. There are a few others here who
probably feel the same way. I'm not saying this in a hostile manner.
Just in a "please don't do it" sense.

Welcome to the list, Null!
