Yes Virginia, there is a New Yorker archives and I hit
pay dirt in the info. gathering area. After calling
the main number and being switched between three phone
extensions, I encountered a very friendly and helpful
archivist at the fourth, who gave me the information
below:

The New Yorker archives, known as the “New Yorker
Records” are held at the New York Public Library, main
branch on 40th & 5th Ave., in the Manuscripts and
Archives Division (Room 328); which is part of Rare
Books.

The Rare Books phone is: (212) 930-0801. The hours
of the Manuscripts and Archives Division is as
follows: Tue-Wed: 11:00AM - 5:45pm; Thurs-Sat:
10:00AM – 5:45pm

I was told that the “New Yorker Records” consist of
hundreds of boxes of correspondence, manuscripts, etc.

To access the collection you go to the third floor of
the main branch, Room 316, The Office of Special
Collections. Once there, explain the purpose of your
research and you will be issued a Readers Card and you
can go down the hall to Room 328, the Manuscripts and
Archives Division reading room.

At the reading room you can ask for or find, the
Collection Guide to the New Yorker Archives. This
consists of a couple of large binders. These give a
full contents description of every box, an overview of
the complete collection, and brief overviews or
descriptions of the papers of some, specific
individuals.

If you go there in person there is a one to two hour
waiting time for the materials to be retrieved from
the storage area. Another option is to go to the New
York Public Library’s internet website: www.nypl.org
>From there, access the Manuscripts and Archives
Divisions webpage where there is a link to Manscripts
Division Finding Aids – at that page you will find the
full text of the Collection Guide to the New Yorker
Archives on-line (Cool!). You can find what you need
on-line, and then call ahead to the above number and
phone in your request so the material will be there
when you arrive.

(I’m at work or I would have navigated the NY Public
Library Net page to find the individual web page
addresses – thrill of the hunt and all that)

Happy hunting Bananafishers!!

In addition, the direct phone number for the Reference
Desk in the Main Reading Room
(Room 315) is: (212) 930-0831. This is the place
that sent me on to Rare Books. Directory Assistance
does not have this number – you have to ask for it
within the “brambles” of library switchboard
extensions once you get past the main recorded voice
menu.
