I've been pretty busy with finals so I haven't had much time to devote
to email. I have a pre-calculus final tomorrow that might just be the
end of me (no calculators -- ugh). Anyhow, I finally got around to
catching up on the list and I have a number of things to say, so you'll
have to excuse the utter absense of focus in this post.

As devoted as I am to the train of thought that off-topic discussion is
the heart and soul of groups such as this one, I don't have much desire
to continue in the (a)theism thread. If we try not to repeat what's
already been said, I don't think there'll be much left to say. It's
certainly not worth continuing elsewhere (like off-list). The thread
has been sleeping in its coffin for a while now, and I'll call this post
the nail that keeps it there (until some time in the distant future
when, like every good monster, it inevitably claws its way out to avenge
itself).

The Franny from "Franny" not the Franny from "Zooey?" Are you crazy?!

Grammar and spelling are good.

Jim, were you being ironic in calling us sheep (after talking about
"Friends")? Seeing as how the lord is your shepherd and all. . . (I
don't mean this to be derogatory)

I can't imagine that one could stand up to the Big Boys on the court
unless one has had one's nose bloodied a few times trying to do so. The
only way to learn to avoid the high elbows is to take a few to the
face. Wedge yourself right into the middle of a heated debate
somewhere. If you sincerely feel like you're out of your league here,
do some training in a place where you're a bit more comfortable - but
not *too* comfortable.

I am "1 day, 11 hours +" away from winning an auction for a beautiful
portable typewriter from "circa 1931." I can't wait! I have to figure
out a way to put "Bravo, Max!" on the case (anybody who catches that
reference gets +5 points according to my Big Black Book of Coolness).
It will be one of my Three Prized Possessions, along with my 1930 copy
of Moby Dick and my old green lantern.

I had never given much thought to the distinction between "that" and
"which." But now that it's been laid out before me, I notice that it
just sounds right. Maybe I have a good ear for that sort of thing.
I've - perhaps for lack of a better way - always had a fondness for the
presumably unreliable "sounding right" method of grammar.

What prompts the mailing of the digest? It seems like it shows up in my
mailbox pretty irregularly. Is it on some sort of schedule? Does it
wait until the collection of posts meets a specified size? How does it
work?

I was reading the information that amazon.com provided for all of its
titles that related to Salinger and in one of the reviews of some
biography or somesuch it was mentioned that Salinger's house caught fire
sometime recently and reportedly burned some unpublished stories,
possibly inciting the (perhaps temporary) decision to publish Hapworth.
Does anybody know if there's any truth to this?

Has anybody seen Magnolia? It's a great flick. Keep an eye out for the
numbers "8," "2," "28," and "82." And also for "Exodus 8:2." And for
Masonic symbols (I havn't figured that out yet). While you're watching,
think "let it go," "let me go," "let them go" and variations on that
theme. But fight the temptation to look up Exodus 8:2. Don't read it
until after you've seen the movie. If you have a running knowledge of
the events in the book of Exodus, you probably won't even need to look
it up. But a lot of people leaving the theatre, who presumably aren't
as familiar as I, were shocked and confused in the last half-hour of the
film. The verse clears it all up, though.

fondly,

-robbie
