I'm not sure if this guy translated Crime and
Punishment but many years ago I was on a lunch date
and was told that one of the better translaters of
Doestoyevsky was Andrew MacAndrew (spelling? maybe
just "Mc") and that someone no less than Nabokov (who
taught Pynchon, Ob.Pyn.ref. "...hey wait a minute guy,
which listserv ya wandered yer butt into anyways, I
mean "Do you know the Kenosha, Kid?") said that only
an Irishman knew how to translate Doestoyevsky.
Yes, I know that's anecdotal but hopefully it
might help. I've seen his translations in Bantam
paperback editions. If his is one of the books you
did browse through at B & N and were not impressed by,
let us know who you eventually find that seems to do
justice to his work.
