Scottie, most of what I 've learned about fictive reality and illusion can
be best
understood by reading _The Rhetoric of Fiction_ by Wayne C. Booth. It
includes a nice chapter on unreliable narratation using our man Holden...

You did get my point--that if a critic theorizes about the way a character
affects an author in terms that show how much the critic has realized the
character beyond the context of the text--then the critic shows more
respect for Salinger's creation than he may be trying to express.

BTW, since it is wise to follow your lead, I may suggest you remove the
"Dr." when addressing me and allow me to do the same?
