P.S. I wasn't sure how to reply to the last two lines of Tim's post, even
though they were indeed the best. I'd almost be tempted to give it the same
kind of answer, though. The theme of Running From Society because You're Too
Sick of It's Phoniness is shot through Salinger's fiction so much that it's
Such a Tempting Candidate for Reasons. If I were going to guess, the real
reasons would probably be linked to such annoyance coupled with, probably, a
pretty low self esteem (one that can't handle praise or criticism well). But
it'd just be a guess. And Salinger would never admit to that publicly :)
