Christian,

I have a few suggestions:
The Longman Pocket Anthology is excellent; it has not only some established
poets (From Shakespeare to Yeats to Whitman) but also many contemporary poets
(Adrienne Rich, James Wright, Richard Wilbur, Gwendolyn Brooks among others).
Edited by R.S. Gwynn, it also provides a thorough introduction to the
literary terms used in poetry. An excellent, essential book.

I also recommend Eight American Poets, an anthology edited by Joel Conarroe.
The poets included are Sylvia Plath, Elizabeth Bishop, Theodore Roethke, Anne
Sexton, Robert Lowell, Allen Ginsberg, John Berryman and James Merrill. It
also includes about a 3 page biography about each poet, and selected poetry.
My favorite poet, e.e. cummings, has a volume entitled '100 Poems' which is
excellent. Also, in 'A Perfect Day for Bananfish' Seymour talks about a
German poet-Rainer Maria Rilke, who is also excellent. I hope my suggestions
have been helpful.
