poetic is the active voice, while the passive tends to be boring (though i'm
not conferring such a label on the hallowed works of my own dear ernie
hemm). "snow covered the fields" just sounds better than "the fields were
covered with snow." the latter is a flat statement. al gore would use the
passive, robert frost or shakespeare the active. whose work would you
rather read?
