Holden Caufield. what is it about him that everybody relates to so well?
Is it because he is blameless, and we all secretly believe ourselves to
be so as well? Or does he represent the outcast that we all think we really
are? Or, as all Salingers stories swing around to eventually, is he innocence
being lost? He's our childhood being fucked around with by the real world.
I know as a teenager, his anarchic christmas vacation is some kind of
beautiful dream, him giving the finger to everybody. Of course, he doesn't
really ever say any of these things out loud, he just thinks it. But at the
end, when he is saved and taken away from all that, I feel an amazing amount
of relief. And the fact he has to go right back to school, it as though he is
validating my going to school.
Everybody relates to holden caufield. That is why he is such a great
character. I mean, if you met him in real life, he might being an annoying
jerk. But we all love him anyway.
