I was on Amazon the other day and saw a relatively new feature called
"listmania." It was new to me, anyway. The list I happened upon was
"most beautiful books," and the first one listed was Catcher, with the
hardcover dust jacket displayed.

I think the listmaker must have been referring to the contents,
because none of the books in the round-up was particularly attractive
(and -- heresy! -- I include the original hardcover in that list), but
the selections could easily qualify as beautiful books, I thought.

DIGRESSION! Here's a chance to plug a book I'm in the middle of
reading just now. It's quite new and may not be in all bookstores yet,
though it was in my local neighborhood shop: WAITING FOR MY CATS TO
DIE, by Stacy Horn. It's about her youthful midlife crisis, her
realization that she's still alone and not in love, her fear that
she'll die that way, and her meditations on her cats, both of which are
diabetic and ailing. And it's about a million other things as well.
Stacy reminds me, in her narrative voice, like a grown-up version of
Holden; she even made me laugh out loud in a few places, as Holden
always does, as she describes her own quirks, as she figures out how
to navigate the shoals of her bewildering world.

Read it! Laugh! Feel good! Keep your fingers crossed for the health
of Stacy's cats!

End of digression and back to your regularly scheduled chaos....
