I've just visited Luke Seeman's website.

You know that someone you love does lousy things.
The stories multiply & presently people you trust
show you the incontrovertible proof. You're given
all the details & the only thing then is to start
working out possible extenuations. Maybe he had
horrible parents or went to a rotten school; there was
that time in the army; don't forget those bad luck
wives; &, dammit, neurosis nearly always goes with
giftedness, & so on. It's uncomfortable but it can be
    made acceptable - just about.

Then, one day, you come round the corner & there it is,
actually taking place before your eyes. You can see
the expression on his face & hear the yelping of the dog
    as it limps away.

Afterwards, things are all changed. You can still,
in a way, recognise that there were good things.
And we mustn't forget we're all just human.
But you can no longer happily share a room with him.
You see him coming down the street & you cross
to the other side, pretending to look in the shop
windows. Something - something like respect -
    has gone forever.

    Scottie B.
