This, from an Iranian friend (see below my message). Note, I did some research and the other movie he's talking about is "Hamoon", not "Hammon". It's the same director as "Pari" and is considered the director's best film.

Read about it at:

http://www.iranian.com/News/Nov98/mehrjui.html

Also read this:

PARI
Dariush Mehrjui, 1995; 115 minutes
In Hamoon (1990), director Mehrjui took on the subject of intellectual confusion and disillusionment in a remarkably cinematic treatment; in that film, the protagonist sends a copy of J.D. Salinger's Franny and Zooey to his lover. It is this book that shapes Pari, movie and character. A young girl, a student of literature, wrestles with a spiritual crisis after reading the story of a 5th-century mystic who lost everything in a fire- the book is a legacy from Assad, Pari's older brother, who committed suicide by burning himself alive. While her second brother Safa remains a recluse in the country, her youngest sibling Dadashy tries to dissuade her from following Assad's path and to resurrect her taste for life. Niki Karimi, who has appeared in previous works by Mehrjui, turns in a remarkable performance as Pari.

and this:

--"Hamoon," a dark comedy-drama that evokes comparison to Woody Allen's "Husbands and Wives," will stun anyone who assumes Iranian society is free of post-modern discontents. Directed by Dariush Mehrjui, it's about a 40'ish intellectual whose midflife crisis includes a marital meltdown and obsessions with Kierkegaard and J.D. Salinger.

This "Hamoon" is also available at that Iranian film Website at:

Yours,

Dr. Chris Kubica ;)

Dear Dr.Kubica

Salinger's great "Franny and Zooey". One of these films is ""Hammon "" and

the other ""Pari"". I am an Iranian but I think both of two films have deep difficulties. The writer and director, couldn't be able to draw a real image of Salinger's characters. Their understanding from characters like "" Franny, Zooey, Eloise, Franklin, Simor

Lee, Arthur, Liona , Lionel, and unknown person of the great story "" ...Ezmeh""

and ''Holden'' have been completely far from their real deep characters. I am sorry to say this fact , but I think our writers and directors must studied larger about these

characters and especially their apparently hidden delicate features. Send warm hello to J.D.Salinger.

Best Regards

Shadman Shokravi
