Hi Fish people,
been some time since I've written anything on this
mailing list, but I wanted to hype a documentary that
I've been wanting to see for a long time. I found out
it's going to be shown at my college (uc irvine) this
friday. This documentary won a lot of awards at places
like sundance:

I found out that the documentary "Dark Days" is going
to be shown here at my college. I read about this
documentary in a magazine a long time ago, and I've
been looking forward to seeing it for some time. It
also features one of my favorite DJ's on the
soundtrack(DJ Shadow). I got this announcement in my
school email:

"*DARK DAYS: January 25, 7 and 9 p.m., UCI Student
Center, Crystal Cove Auditorium. Tickets are $3 for
UCI students."

>From what I remember about the article (an interview
w/ the director) and after brushing up on it by
reading about it on the internet movie database, this
is what I remember:

"Dark Days" is a documentary by director Marc Singer.
He was out of work and sleeping on a friend's couch,
who was friends w/ some musician that I don't
remember. He spent several months living w/ the "mole
people" in NYC: a group of homeless people living
underground in the abandoned subway tunnels of NYC.
They were issued an eviction notice by Amtrak, and he
wanted to make the documentary to bring attention to
their living conditions and to help raise money to
find housing for the "mole people". He used the
homeless people to be the film crew as well as the
subjects of the documentary. His musician friend
introduced him to the music of DJ Shadow, and he
decided to use his music for the soundtrack.
Initially, the music was used w/o permission, and it
was cut up and edited to fit the documentary. Singer
got a chance to sit down and talk to DJ Shadow. When
Shadow saw the documentary, he gave Singer the go
ahead to use the music w/o charge.

For people who don't know who DJ Shadow is, this guy
is a prodigy. He's in the Guiness book of world
records for the most sampled sounds on an album, and
he mixes classical music, hip hop, punk rock, and many
other musical influences. I heard a story once that a
lady in New York inherited a huge warehouse full of
old vinyl records. She was going to have them thrown
away, but she decided to let him go through the
warehouse and pick out any and all records he wanted
to use. He has also done work w/ groups like
Blackilicious and the side project U.N.K.L.E. (which
also features James Lavelle, Mike D. of the Beastie
Boys, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, and many others;
U.N.K.L.E. was also on the soundtrack for the movie
"The Beach").

For any DJ's or DJ fans, I'd highly recommend checking
out his work on albums like "preemptive strike",
"endtroducing". If you don't want to buy the albums,
just check out some of his songs by downloading them
somewhere:

"organ donor" and "high noon": these two songs should
give you an idea of why he's in the Guiness book of
world records.

I also like:

"Stem / Long Stem"
"Midnight In A Perfect World"
"In/Flux"
"What Does Your Soul Look Like?" part 1-4
