Tim, thank you for such an inviting welcome. I would love to answer your
questions, but I will start it out by simply saying I have never ventured to
New York myself. So I suppose that I found myself so interested in his novels
because I could escape from the place I lived into somewhere that could lead
my mind to full imagination. New York does seem very different from where I
have grown up, but now I have an image of it, not like what I've seen in all
the movies but from how my mind has pictured it from reading Salinger's
books. Although, as you said, Holden did portray universal qualities so
sometimes I would read his narration as the book had taken place near where I
live. At first, the book was frightening to me because of all the unmoral
things that take place (prostitution, swearing etc) but I did have to open my
eyes and realize that those things happen everywhere. I don't know how I was
so naive in my first reaction, even though I read it the first time when I
was younger.
Also-
Skifrog, I would love to hear your interpretation of Bananafish. Do you agree
with the people that think Seymore is a pedaphile? Personally, I am appauled
at that thought and believe he is only interested in children because of his
yearning for innocence- which is also related to the whole theme of Cather in
the Rye. Send me your thoughts.
