Within the context of the view of the world underlying the Teddy story...

I think the kid was very advanced spiritually and intellectually, a great
soul, and had a genuine vision of his death before it happened...I got the
feeling he was in a bit of a rush to get to the pool, knowing he was getting
ready to step out of this body--like he had an appointment to keep.

So his sister pushed him, accidentally, into an empty pool.
