david: no. the text leaves exactly who Teddy was in India irrelevant,
although personally I always did fancy that this was Salinger's way of
nodding to Hesse. Then again who knows? If I remeber correctly though,
isn't Siddhartha an adapatation of the legend of Buddha? i'll have to look
it up in the afternoon. good morning  and happy new year!
