The thing that always led me to believe that Teddy jumped on his own was the way he talked to Nicholson about his "love" for his parents and the way most humans react to painful events. I can't remember exactly, I'd have to look again, but it seemed to me as if he was, in a way, convincing himself that the mourning his parents would go through would be pretty much, I don't know... superficial. I may be way off here. Its been 3-5 years since I've read it.
