of course the pool was empty, there is a definite ambiguity about it, but the
allusion is pretty much that it is...when teddy says 'might' he is speaking
hypothetically, yes, but we are given the impression that he is entirely
confident in what he has forseen; if not confident than at least accepting of
it...
