Of course the pool was empty, of course Teddy died, and his sister pushed him in, and he was pretty sure it was going to happen (as he wrote in his journal--it would happen either that day or when he was a bit older). I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound snotty, but the ending was explained, forshadowed, and set up by the entire story before it. I don't want to stifle anyone's right to interpretation, but in my opinion, the story doesn't leave that much room for question-- or at least, it seems to me, it doesn't intend to.
