 Oh come on, folks.  I enjoy the equivocation, but
 let's not be silly.  Of course the pool was empty,
 of course Teddy died, and his sister pushed him in,
 and he was pretty sure it was going to happen (as
 he wrote in his journal--it would happen either
 that day or when he was a bit older).  I'm sorry,
 I don't mean to sound snotty, but the ending was
 explained, forshadowed, and set up by the entire 
 story before it.  I don't want to stifle anyone's 
 right to interpretation, but in my opinion, the 
 story doesn't leave that much room for question--
 or at least, it seems to me, it doesn't intend to.

I completely agree....the whole what if the pool wasnt empty thing was just
something kind of interesting suggested by this nut in my Directed Studies
Class.  Don't worry, I also think that he was pushed...but wouldn't it be
weird if......
