I have *finally* found some more info on Seymour's weapon of choice. The
following comes from Universitaet Dortmund, Germany, and I consider it quite
accurate. I can get technical specifications if anyone's interested, but this
says plenty:

The "Ortgies automatic handgun" as [Salinger] calls it
normally goes by the name "Ortgies Patent".
It is a German automatic handgun. It was built
during the 1920īs and 30īs. It was built in
3 calibres: 6.30
             7.65
             9 milimeter kurz

The Americans call the "9 milimeter kurz" the
9 milimeter Browning.

This weapon was a small pocket pistol. It was
purchased for or by women. It was also carried
by "gentlemen". Its predesessor was the small
pocket pistol worn in a holster by French, and
German officers during WWI. This small weapon
was worn basically to show their officerīs
status.

During the 20`s and 30īs the pocket pistol
market was flooded by cheap versions or
imitations made chiefly by the Spanish.
Obviously a member of the middle class or
upper class would have prefered the Ortgies
Patent not only because it cost more but also
because of itīs better quality.
