I don't know, Helena. I know what you're saying but I also know what he was saying.
Not about the film (since it was a Van Sant film, I'm willing to bet the farm I'll
love it), but about the dedication. Of course the screenwriter has a right to dedicate
anything he wants to whomever he chooses, but I can sort of agree with what Dave
is saying...

When it comes to writing, I'm sort of an elitist--I admit it, although so were Salinger
(via Buddy), and Ginsberg. I get angry when untalented people (read, "Not living
up to their potential) dedicate terrible work to very talented people. I haven't
got an example, but just imagine if the Spice Girls (I hope against hope I'm not
stepping on any Bananafishers' preferences with that) dedicated their album to Salinger.
Wouldn't you be sort of annoyed? Indignant?

Dave doesn't own Ginsberg, but he may think he does. I think I own the Clash (I
nearly fell out of my seat when I heard "Rudie Can't Fail" in "Grosse Point Blank"...it
was a good movie; it was just kind of shocking to realize that someone else in the
world loves that song...) And don't we all sort of feel like we own Salinger? Don't
we feel the kind of possessive protective urge when some idiot tries to claim him
too? I saw a movie on HBO late one night called "Purple Haze," a 70's hippie movie,
and the adolescent main character's last name was Caulfield, and his little sister
was named Phoebe, and the movie recreated the entire scene in Phoebe's room--"updated"
for the 70's. I nearly puked on the television.

I don't know if anyone can relate, but I understand the want to keep a great artist
to oneself. Didn't a Bananafisher recently write that she wanted to take all the
Salinger books off of the library shelves to protect him from the world. It's the
wrong thing to do, but many bad decisions are made in the name of love.
Brendan

i really think that's a bit harsh.

no matter how shitty his film was, it was *his*. and he's as worthy of
dedicating it to ginsberg as you are. what, do you *own* ginsberg or
something? he's private property? do we have to pass an entrance test in
order to qualify as 'worthy'?

i don't want to start a flame war here, but i just *have* to say that i
find your attitude disgusting.
