In a message dated 98-01-09 14:56:45 EST, you write: << Its really too bad everyone is ignoring Ulee's Gold, Peter Fonda deserves some nominations. >> I know this is a matter of taste, but I think Fonda deserves to be shot for Ulee's Gold :) If I didn't live in Central Florida, and wasn't familiar with the areas depicted in the film, I'd have been Completely bored off my arse. Ugh! In other words, THANK GOD everyone's ignoring Ulee's Gold... :) Sure, he tried to import mythological significance into trailer park life--Ulee, Fonda's character--was obviously Ulysses, and Penny was his daughter (Penelope--which was also his dead wife's name), but Fonda's character was, well, stiffer than Al Gore and Mr. Spock combined. And yes, like Homer's work by the same name, this film was about the restoration of the home and family--at least, that was the goal the characters in both works were moving toward. But at least Homer's Ulysses was human. Fonda's character? It's like the freaking guy wasn't even human or something. Grief and angst are one thing--that was ridiculous. He may as well have been made of paper maiche.... Jim PS Brian--at least the question wasn't--"are you a homosexual music major?"
