I've heard that Holden Caufield could be "hold in caul field."  A caul is by
definition "the inner fetal membrane of higher vertebrates esp. when covering
the head at birth."  So he's trying to hold in his caul...in the rye field or
something.  He wants to stay the innocent, pure child that he once was.  Sorry
if someone has already given this interpretation.  I haven't read the million
posts from the last few days yet, but I'm working on it.  :)
