I have to admit, I have a problem with the whole pregnancy thing too.  There's
surface similarities as far as physical symptoms go, but that's about it, and
a whole lot of other causes could produce the same physical symptoms.  

And your last point--the relevance of a pregnancy to the story--well, of
course we could Give it meaning, but that doesn't mean the meaning is exactly
hitting us over the head.  Other causes seem to point to more relevant
meanings--meanings more consistent the what seems to be the focal point of the
story, namely, a spiritual crisis...
