I have never seen the Ranchan book on JDS, nor the Johnson article. =
Haven't read lit crit. since my old grad days. I think according to =
amazon, the Ranchan is OP. Has anyone read it? Am curious; you know, =
the old former professor angle. I don't think, however, one needs =
Vedanta as *the* skeleton key to the Glasses. It might prove handy in =
certain instances,but part of JDS's accomplishment as a writer, I feel, =
is a creation that allows readers of different sensibilities and ages to =
enter his *casino proper*. Once inside, what happens depends alot on =
the individual. He most emphatically is not a mere *apostle of =
adolesence*, though I must confess the alliteration is somewhat =
winsome. Didn't see anything in the U.S. media about JDS's 80th, though =
could have missed it. The last flareup of course was around the Joyce =
M. thing; in Oct? Think I saw a photo of JDS and his current wife in =
Newsweek(?) around then. An aside: *my* favorite photo is the one of =
him walking by the fence in what appears to be his bathrobe. (Though =
Sonny's , as described in her/his (sorry, not sure) website is the =
right one.) Think it first appeared in the Life article done when F&Z =
was published. I haven't read the Bananfish archives in full, just =
skipped around a bit in Dec. 98, so I might be bringing up very old =
news. Joyce M. lives near here, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. =
She gets a lot of space in the S.F. Chronicle, the local newspaper. =
Even did a huge article with pics on her move from NH to Marin County. =
Very expensive real estate there; imagine the memoir is helping. Doubt =
though movie rights are in the offing. Thanks, Camille, for your =
welcome. =20
