Well, it seems the consensus is in. In the back of my head (I know
what I know) I think I agree with you Liz and Camille, that he cannot
bear the thought of having his bubble broken.

However, I have a transcript, purportedly made by the FBI when
investigating the murder of John Lennon. I am not sure if it is
authentic (and I may even have several different transcripts)
but here it is, for what it's worth.

     all the best,
     Mattis

     -------- transcript follows --------

     "Hello."

     "Hello Jane?, Jane Gallagher?"

"Well it used to be Gallagher, but it's O'Connor now. Who is this
      anyway?"

"It's me Holden, Holden Caulfield. Remember we used to spend summer
vacations together, you know, we used to talk, and well.. well, play
      checkers and things like that."

"Holden Caulfield... weren't you Bobby Stradlater's roommate
at that school Pencey Prep? Boy that brings back memories"

"Pencey, oh sure, but that was ages ago, and anyway I wasn't there
for very long. But I mean, don't you remember how we always used
to play checkers, doncha remember. You used to keep your kings in
      the back row and all."

"That's funny, what good is it to keep all the kings in the back
      row?"

"You used to say that you liked the way that it looked, really you did."

"I guess I used to say some pretty silly things then. But don't tell
me you called me up to ask me if I wanted to play a game of checkers.
My goodness, it's three o'clock in the morning."

"No, no, not to play checkers. I mean I've been thinking about making
this call for quite a while now. A really long time, if you want to
know the truth. You know I've always had this dream of moving up
to a log cabin up in Maine. Just to get away from New York and all
the phonies around here. The whole place is just lousy with phonies
if you want to hear about it, but I guess you don't and all. And I
always thought that if I had to spend my time out in the woods, it
would be great to have you there."

"Oh, you mean we could play checkers."

"Yeah, checkers and just be ourselves. That's what I've got to do.
If you want to know the truth, I've become quite a liar, just to
keep myself sane with all these phonies around. But if we could get
away I could just, well, be myself."

"That sounds like a grand idea. But, Holden, you know I'm married.
I've been married for twenty seven years now, and you don't think my
husband would like me to just take off like that. Do you?"

"Of course not. Of course not. I knew all that, really. I only said that
that's what always wanted to do. That's why I called, to tell you
that that's what I always wanted and all."

      "That's very nice."

"Oh, and one more thing. I guess I wanted to see if you still remembered
me. You do remember me don't you?"

"Oh sure, sure I remember. Okay? I have to go back to sleep now,
      good night."

      "Good night."
