Well, I'm not sure about "objectivity" in fiction in the first place...and I do respect polysemy too much not to enjoy the way fiction lets readers find multiple meanings in the same texts... But, I do respect close reading and sometimes construct what I "know" about a character based on what isn't said...Holden and his father don't seem to have the kind of insights about each other that would encourage me to imagine Holden's father as the hero charging in to save Holden's psyche. Dunno. Socttie is sure to know better...that was simply my impression.
