Ordinarily, I would refrain from commenting on such an iniquitous
subject, but: on the way home from the film, there was an awkward
silence followed by snickering in the car when someone mentioned
Paltrow's nomination for the Golden Globes.

Now, wherever tobacco might have been grown, it certainly wasn't farmed
by the English in Virginia in 1593. The Jamestown colony might indeed
have given rise to such plantations later on--and thus a Virginia
tobacco plantation--but Jamestown itself dates, surely, from after the
reign of Elizabeth.
