Well, now, funny you should mention all that. I kept a particular
eye out as the train crossed the lowlands near the coast -- I had
D-Day on my mind, and a particular training school -- but I regret
that there's been no choir practice for me. Just aimless wandering
down streets (OK, I'm a philistine) that I don't much care to visit
right now. Maybe I'm too like those isolated, pen-scratching men in
Sgt. X's company, or maybe I'd just prefer to have some company with
whom to hold hands, or maybe London simply isn't the place for me at
present. But I'll make do with all I can, I guess. (Whatever that
means.)

The Metropolitan Police gave me quite a hard time over the Irish part
of my background; they grilled me about my family and my visit to
Ireland (several years ago!) and the stamps in my passport and a
couple of other details. But like the Laughing Man, I gave up
nothing....

I did get a lovely welcoming call from Scottie (sorry that we
couldn't meet!), and am contemplating Virginia Woolf, who lived just
down the street from where I am.

I shall spend the majority of my time left here in reading Don
DeLillo and wondering where one can affordably eat. God save the
queen. You're supposed to say that, right?
