I'm sorry to come mincing in like some po-faced
Savonarola but I beg to differ about the olives.
In all the 537 cases of children in the 2-10 age group
that I've studied there isn't one - not ONE - whose
dotie little mouth didn't pucker like a baby prune
at the sight or thought of the olive.
The olive only confirms Salinger as someone writing
for a readership whose range extends no further than
the New Yorker & Vanity Fair - & back again.
These sophisticated little honies are as convincing
as Tina Brown's kisses. They are to the epicene dandies
of the Upper East Side what Shirley Temple used to be
to the rough hewn labourers of Des Moines.
