Hi Bananafishers,

I'm new -- my name is Melinda and I recently got interested in Salinger
again in an
unusual way: I was describing to my British husband the carousel at
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and how it has those metal rings which you
throw at
a target. (You hardly EVER find carousels with those rings anymore...
which is a shame,
I find them rather charming! :))

As you might've guessed from the above I'm from California, but
am currently living in the United Kingdom. I was sort of looking for an
author to re-read and the carousel thing reminded me of Salinger and off
I went! :)

I've just finished F&Z and have checked out RHTRB,C (or whatever the
acronym is around here! :)), and S:AI.

Incidently, I find the Bananafish archives thoroughly fascinating ! I'm
still only in April 1998,
working my way up to the present. ;)

--- end of intro -- :)))

RE Faulkner:
=========

I checked out William Faulkner's "Absalom, Absalom!" from the library
today after reading a post from the Bananafish archives which
recommended it. I don't know nothin' bout Faulkner, but I noticed a few
things which made me think he had an influence on Salinger:

1) One of his short stories is called "Uncle Willy" -- which is
similar to JDS' "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut" (note: I haven't
read either, I'm not saying they're simliar beyond the titles.)

2) I read on the inside cover that Faulkner was publishing some of his
most famous novels from 1929 - 1939 -- surely Salinger was aware of this
exciting new writer coming on the scene and would've read his stuff?
Faulkner
went to Hollywood in the 1930's and worked on film scripts -- perhaps an
inspiration for D.B. in CITR, especially if Salinger admired his work
and then became disillusioned with Faulkner's decision to work in
Hollywood.

All this is my own somewhat ignorant speculation -- please do enlighten
me if I'm way off base here, I would love to hear your knowledge about
this so that I and others on this list may benefit! :)))

Cheers,
