I say as I have always said: let discussion lists permit all
(civil) discussions, with no apologies or excuses necessary. As long as a
discussion continues on a list, at least two list members will necessarily
be engaged in it. That's critical mass. People who can't be bothered to
delete or ignore messages they don't find "on topic" have issues that
should prevent them from administrative say in public forums.

I don't subscribe to the list because of J. D. Salinger, whose writing
interests me these days only when I teach it. It's the community of
people who post to this list that keeps me on. In fact, I often skip the
Salinger posts, which tend to recycle material that's ultimately kind of
dull. So post on, you fat and greasy citizens, post on.
