robbie, your translation analogy was perfectly knowing (as women
usually are). When I was growing up, reading translated poetry was
pretty boring. Robert Bly started to change that in the second half
of the century and many more poets became involved in translating.
Rosenberg definitely follows that tradition (See Bly's Eight Stages
of Translation). And you are also echoing my impression of Bloom in
The Book of J...I thought anyone else would have been more strongly
attacked for speculation and lack of evidence but Bloom did have good
arguments. I suspected that Bloom and Roseberg were singing to
amateurs like me who know little about how the bible came to be
written. Part of me hates the idea of redaction, part of me loves it.
That's why I write professionally as well as edit professionally, I
suppose, but the real point I want to make is that at least Bloom and
Rosenberg are thinking about how a female voice may well have been
part of the bible's composition. will
