Hi all,

Well, this discussion seems to have fallen into the abyss, so there's not
much more for me to say. Somewhere in a bunch of stuff written to me that, as
far as I can tell, made little or no sense, Daniel wrote:

"Hey, do whatever the hell you want but don't expect sympathy when crying in
your beer because no one understands, those are the reapings of the rebel.  It
can be fun to mock the rules, thank God for rules."

Unfortunately, I can't respond, because I don't remember crying in my beer
about anything. I'm quite happy with the way things are and the way the word
is used these days. And I have not had any problem with people not
understanding what I've written either. So this sentence, like so many of Daniel's,
leaves me scratching my head. I too am all in favor of "rules" (I suspect
they are inevitable). I like the exceptions, too. And catachresis, as I've
said. So I'm not sure I get the point of all this, if there was one.

I don't see anything else that needs comment, so thanks all for the thoughts.
And thanks to all those writers dead and still living, whose work was cited
or mentioned in this discussion, from Donne and Keats to Herman and Lawrence
and Jacques and even any of those who might be reading these pages. Thanks
all, for whatever it is you have written.

All the best,

--John
