Wait...wait...dangit, what're ya doing talking about Salinger here, of
all places :).

Lane's probably a good example of the self absorbed type, but I'm not
sure he was a psychopathic personality. Do you think he was really
capable of causing the destruction associated with them in the article?
I realize I didn't quote from that paragraph, but the paragraph
preceeding the one I quoted from described them as being able to wreck
people's lives, wreck corporations, wrech nations all the while thinking
they're saints.

Lane seemed too tame. I could be wrong.

I believe that the St. Francis thing may be another possible motivation,
though, in any case. The woman is trying to "save" him -- that what you
mean?
