Re: Restored (and a final story for Luke and Daniel)

I don't see John presenting himself as an authority in an overall sense,
but as claiming knowledge of specific fields and people. When he says
he's read more Derrida than anyone on this list, he's probably right.
On top of that, he's studied with him.

Does this make him an inherently more important person than anyone
else? No. I'm actually much more important than John is -- at least to
the human race and the further development of the species, largely
because I'm willing to reproduce, partly because I'm just such an
exceptional character and wonderfully handsome man. The human race
NEEDS my genes in the gene pool.

But it does mean his opinion of Derrida's ideas should carry some
weight. I say this for the same reason you take your car to the
mechanic and your sick wife to the doctor, and not vice-versa.

The important thing, I was trying to point is, is what YOU believe. Are
your critiques of John consistent with your own philosophy? I don't
think they are. I think, since you believe in an "objective" knowledge
of things, you should recognize that John O, when it comes to Derrida,
has that in ways others don't. That's all.

Does it make him a better person? Not necessarily. He's not claiming
to be, though.
