and if you liked beowulf, you'll really really love Grendel by John
Gardner.  written about 20 years ago (as opposed to several hundred) it's
from the nasty beast's point of view and it's really quite amazingly funny
and eye-opening.  you walk away loving grendel much more than those mead
chugging humorless saps of human beings.
