first off I'd like to say how nice it is to see this list back on track!
bananafish digest 33 was back to the quality stuff. having said that I
think my last posting (did i really call it "WHERE"S THE BEEF?" - i'm
afraid i did) probably seemed out of place by the time it was posted.
I'd like to know (Tim??) how to change my subscription so that i get the
postings as they are sent as opposed to receiving the digest in a whole
lump each day because today when i read all the postings i just noticed
that, in general, there seems to be a consistency to the flow of messages
with the exception of mine which kind of gimped it's way in the middle.
i found it really funny that a few messages prior to mine happened to
mention ts eliot's "the wasteland" because as you may have noticed (if
you read my post) i put an excerpt from it at the end of my message.
maybe bananafishers' minds just think alike sometimes. . . i read "the
wasteland" in high school and honestly haven't thought much about it (or
read it again) since but it just came to mind when i said that i was
afraid the list was becoming a wasteland. so i surfed the internet foe a
copy of it and added a little excerpt. who could have known that it
would be mentioned in a few posts before mine???? how random. but i'm
glad to see that so many others really appreciate it.
now onto something else. . .

  >>Anyway, the only young actor that comes to mind to play Holden is
  Leonardo >>DiCaprio... >>but... nah. It'd have to be a new-comer.

i agree with your dicaprio idea and, stay with me here for a minute, what
about jared leto from "my so called life" (he played jordan catalano)? i
know it may seem odd but have any of you seem him in the film (set in
ireland) "the last of the high kings?" for some reason i could see him
as holden but you may all think i'm a bit odd on that one. back to
dicaprio - when i read someone's posting few days back about who might
be adequate to play holden in a catcher screen version dicaprio just
jupmed into my mind (have any of you seen him in "the basketball
diaries"?) - it is an incredible film and he is amazing in it. i
remember when his ill friend dies he completely freaks out at how "phony"
all his other "friends" were toward him once he got sick. and he is
always a bit different from all the others - always feeling alienated and
writing in his journal. dicaprio just seems to have a lot of depth and
soul in his acting and i think that's the key if any actor wanted to play
holden. jonathan taylor thomas? no way. i'm glad he enjoyed catcher so
much and was so moved by it but he's just such a little teeny bopper idol
(not all his fault, i'm sure but still. . . ) and i would absolutely
cringe and feel physically ill if a screen version of catcher (if it is
ever made - unlikely) ever became some hollywood hit that every teen
beat/tiger beat/bop (do those still exist?) fan ran out to see so they
could swoon over jt thomas. but, to completely contradict myself, maybe
it might be a good thing *if it was done right* because cathcer and
holden have hepled a lot of people (old, young, male, female) feel better
about themselves and how they view life and society. so who knows?
obviously not me. but i am definately not against a screen version ever
being made - if it was done correctly it would be an amazing film. any
  thoughts????

and on one last note, thanks for the direction and comments, listmaster
tim! hey that sounds a bit like a rap star. . . grandmaster flash. . .
  listmaster tim. . . ok, maybe not. it's been a long night. . .
