Helena,

You're probably safe with most anything Vonnegut. His stuff is serious, but
it goes down really easily and is often damn funny. The thing with Vonnegut
is that he's deceptively simple. My favorite is Mother Night, but the end of
that is like a punch in the gut. For something lighter try Slapstick, Cat's
Cradle (heavy ending, but hilarious book), Breakfast of Champions, or God
Bless You Mr. Rosewater. All his books are 2 day reads.

Another good light reading writer is Charles Bukowski. Try Women or Ham On
Rye, two great pieces of autobio fiction.

And for one that enjoys no literary reputation whatsoever but is a fuck of a
lot of fun to read, try Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin. It's light,
fun stuff about San Francisco, my favorite city in the world.
