I love this story.  Thanks for sharing it with us.  

It seems I have done the same thing - break up with people and obsess
about getting the Salinger books back.  However, I have solved this
problem because I now purchase many copies of each and give them out to
people and don't have to worry about getting them back.  

Because "they need them more than us".
