I'm quite the Salinger neophyte, having only finished CITR for the first
time a few months ago. Over the weekend, I read "Bananafish" for the
second time. After having seen the start of this thread, actually.

A couple of sentences attributed to Seymour struck me as quite bitter:
the crack about Muriel "having her hair dyed Mink", or that she
was up in her room making dolls for poor little girls all over the world.

They made me wonder if part of what was going on for Seymour was that
he was disgusted with himself for thinking that way about another person.
That he himself was sinking into the superficial, and couldn't bear it.

I'm sure after having peeled a layer off of this onion several more times
I'll have completely different ideas about what is going on.
