This phantom reference to Salinger as a beatnik troubles me.  I can go
back once again and thoroughly peruse my posts for the offending phrase,
but I will take my chances first on insisting that I never said aught on
the matter.  You must have in mind the person who started the
foolishness.  Calling salinger a beatnik is like calling the Pope a
Christian fundamentalist.  The latter is little more than the
tragic-parodic image of the former, made out of candy and grahan
crackers.
