Two things that Mr. Salinger seems pretty handy with that may be
univseral (IMHO) are language and silence.

It seems to me that we could get caught up in a perpectival web but the
fact that many of us stay on line receiving and sending messages about our
experiences with Salinger's texts may speak to his universality...I don't
know enough about list life to claim that they attract universal ideas and
cling to them, but it seems that our minds (mostly with our language and
silences) engage each other in virtual and sometimes "universal" ways...in
other words, our list discussion adds to the facts that mr. salinger's
books still sell well and are read frequently in schools...i'm not sure if
"universal" is the right word, but it does explain to me why we still
discuss his writing with reading and writing and even silent passion.

BTW, I loved Arne's rhetorical use of email list life. By saying I've not
said anything and am leaving but before I go, here's what I think, my
reading eyes focussed and my summer mind kicked into gear...and not only
do I appreciate Arne's rhtetorical sensibility, but I'm glad he had the
grace to stick around a bit longer...

It's really a perfect list for bananafish...
