Some of these are ground in history and have become most significant more
because the love I had for them at one time, than because the love I have
for them now.  Sentiment. 

In order of encounter:

Orson Scott Card: for showing that perspective determines truth.  And
for giving this atheist the first glimer of spiritual consciousness.

JD Salinger: for giving this philosopher a way to interpret religion, and
a sense of spiritual quest.  To show that the composite makes the whole.

Dostoyevski: for understanding mankind.  For understanding mankind.  For
understanding mankind.

Raymond Carver: for finally putting on the page the ambiguity of men's
struggle.  For the narrative time bomb.  For the gift of silence.
