so fishers - i've been away for awhile, only back a couple of days. i can't tell from the archives how the prophecy thing took over, so i don't exactly know where other threads may have left off. i am curious about thor's mention of a teddy/hapworth tie in. other than though, my big curiousity which my have been discussed already (i'm actually certain it has) is with the maynard/salinger letters being posted at sotheby's. i can't imagine being able to bring myself to go look at them if i had the ability to do so, and in a way i'm glad that norton is returning them to their originator. but it is such a temptation, isn't it? not b/c i give a crap about the relationship between them - but b/c early on, he must have communicated a lot of thoughts about how a young writer proceed. one of my favorite bits ever is the letter which begins "dear old tyger that sleeps...". it is one of the most beautiful peices i've seen about how to remain true to your vision, filtered through the intense love and hope of a brother (S.) wanting to see buddy fulfill everything S. knows he capable of. as i watch my little sister try to live her life in a way which is true to her beleifs and her enormous talents, i am frequently reminded of that letter - and i relate to all of the love and hope and encouragement S. tries to convey. that letter was her introduction to salinger's work. so back to the sotheby's display, my curiousity is along those lines. what does someone who has such a love/hate relationship (and considerable experience) with the written word and it's unfortunate but neccessary ties to the publishing world have to say to young person for whom he has affection and probably a little admiration before the relationship confused it all?
