If you're really interested, read Daniel and Ezekiel (at least the first
few chapters), then Matthew 24, then the book of Revelation. A good bit
of Revelation could be reconstructed just from Daniel and Ezekiel, so it
fits pretty squarely in the category of Jewish Apocalyptic literature.
Most of the imagery in Daniel is explained within the text itself too.
Just pretend all the meaning of the text is on the surface and that the
imagery that isn't explained can be taken at face value and a lot of it
makes sense. Course, there's still more questions than answers about a
lot of it too.
